HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Institute was established in 1991 as one of the Bank’s operational units mandated to provide capacity building to the Bank’s staff and staff of financial sector, mainly focusing on achievement of the Bank objectives. This was further expanded when it began conducting training programmes for regional central banks in support of the respective country’s regional engagements in the East African Community (EAC) as well as Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
The existing challenges together with growing demand for competence-based capacity building in the financial sector nationally, regionally and globally call for transformation of the BOT Training Institute. In this regard, the Bank of Tanzania has registered its Training Institute with the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) with registration number REG/BTP/116 to offer Ordinary Diploma in Banking Practice and Supervision programme.
The objective being to strengthen the role of the Institute to effectively support the achievement of the Bank’s Vision and Mission in a broader sense. Therefore, the Institute intends to strengthen and leverage the supervisory role of the Bank of Tanzania beyond the legal and regulatory compliance aspects and addressing unethical and unprofessional practices in the financial sector.
